Everybody, everywhere is searching for answers to live a fulfilled life in their pursuit of happiness. What we love though, is when we find people that are doing everything that keeps their body, mind and soul energised so that they cannot feel anything but amazing. Jack May has a love affair with experimentation of diet and exercise. His unwavering energy and enthusiasm to lead a healthy and balanced life, and help others do the same has lead him to THR1VE. Which leads us back to Jack. Who has us and Cleo Magazine who has nominated Jack for Bachelor of the Year 2014 screaming 'Paleo'...
From builder to THR1VE's head barista, store manager, supplement innovator and work out test pilot what inspired and motivated you to take the leap of faith into a new career
I have always been interested in health and fitness. I was always active and very fortunate to grow up in a situation that presented a paleo lifestyle before it had a name. My parents owned a farm in the northern rivers of NSW and we grew our own vegetables, ran around barefoot and were always outside. It all just kinda made sense to me. My personal experience eating Paleo was amazing, I was introduced to the whole primal lifestyle by my cousin Josh Sparks (who is the CEO and founder of THR1VE). He is also the first person to ever take me to a gym! So i guess I owe him a lot! As far as personal results -
I feel better, stronger, more energised and happier...almost instantly. The whole experience was super positive.
There was (and still partly is) an obvious hole in our food ideas as a society and THR1VE offers a great opportunity to educate and support the greater community in that way. It allows me to help create an opportunity for change and show the world what really can be done.
Fad or for real. Paleo is
I think like anything that attracts media attention, there is an element of faddishness to some of the press around Paleo, but as a lifestyle, this represents a return to how we evolved over 2 million years. Eating, moving, and resting as nature intended.
So if it's a fad - it's a lasting one!
Setting aside the science underpinning the ancestral health movement, incorporating Primal and Paleo, which I happen to find pretty compelling, there is also the reality of my personal experience, that of friends and family, and of literally thousands of our customers. It works!
To simplify it enormously, what is real, exciting and apparent within just a couple of weeks, is the results you get from cutting our processed grains and sugars. You can't argue with how you feel, and the results show up positively on blood work labs, in athletic and mental performance, and in the mirror. I am working longer, harder and more stressed than I ever have been, but I can still hit PB's in the gym and feel overall more energetic and positive than I did at 21!
Can you tell us about THR1VE and what does it mean to you
THR1VE is an innovative, real, healthy, and Paleo inspired fast food brand. We offer delicious, nutritious food in minutes and are constantly striving for new ways to push the envelope on what we can deliver in terms of quality, service and information. THR1VE is the future of fast food.
Beyond that, THR1VE is a community of passionately like minded people - in store and online - providing inspiration and support to those committed to transforming their lives. With or without knowing it, by simply eating a meal with THR1VE you are doing yourself a huge favour!
It is delicious, easy, healthy food available in minutes - It take the excises out of eating well.
We all lack motivation at times. How do you stay motivated to lead such a healthy and fit lifestyle especially as winter has us feeling like running only to cover up and lay low
Look nobody is perfect, we all like to indulge at times, I have already said the way you feel is testament enough to how I stay motivated.
Also one you cut out a lot of sugary foods you find you develop your true palate - certain foods taste better, and I personally notice the more refined processed ones taste...processed (not to say that I don't ever eat then I just choose my timing.)
THR1VE helps a lot too, working in a place you're so passionate about, it helps to drive you, keeping you motivated and on track. As I mentioned it is a great support network and a forum to explore and develop the ideas and inspiration needed to maintain a healthier life. I LOVE IT!
Bad habits are hard to break. What advice do you have people who want to make a lifestyle change but are struggling to make the change
You have to want it! Then the rest will come. Have a good support network of people that care but also know what they're doing and saying. Set achievable goals - long term and short term.
The best thing you can do is give it ago - 30 days without gluten or processed sugar, it's not that long and it might be the best decision of your life. 30 days to change your life, it's an easy decision. Set achievable goals - long term and short term, be smart, don't put unrealistic pressure on yourself. Enjoy it! There is a potential to change your life but also to learn and educate, so embrace that.
What has leading a healthier lifestyle done for you, and how have you seen it change other people's lives
For me it has opened up the amazing possibilities and influence your diet can have on your life. The possibility to change and heal with food! The education I have gotten through simply entering into this idea that the quality of foods affects your quality of life has been more interesting and helpful that most of the study I've done. It has become a huge passion of mine and I hold all ideals very closely, once you realise the full potential of a primal lifestyle it takes on a lot more than just what you eat. It's how you sleep, how you move and how you live. It's a beautiful experience.
For others i think it can be as simple as just feeling better all the way through to pushing yourself to achieve more. It's an awesome feeling being able to say 'today I feel better than I have in years!'
For those of us that are short on time, what kick as work out tips do you have to make the most of our time working out
Firstly get your diet right (remove grains and processed sugars). I love HIIT training (high intensity training). Something as small as 8 minutes can burn fat for up to 48hrs. Great for people that are time poor and looking to keep in shape! Otherwise weight training - a lot of people feel that lifting weights is bad or only if you want to get bigger, but it is a great way to form your body into a stronger, leaner form. You don't need to be there for hours a simple 30 minute whole body program will be awesome for most people.
Top 5 guilt free and delicious feeds
THR1VE has a great range of treats that are guilt free. My favourite at the moment is the naked paleo bar or the cavefood protein bars. I love the ABC butter (almond, brazil and cashew nut butter), 80% dark chocolate and sweet potato pancakes sweetened with maple syrup.
All work and no play is not ok. What is Jack's idea of a good time
Surfing! I just got back from Bali, which has been amazing! I love getting away from the city and finding some bush. Everybody loves a good night out with their mates - and tequila is considered paleo ;-)
What is next for THR1VE and Jack May
THR1VE has just opened our 4th store in Pitt St Westfield in Sydney which is really exciting. We are working towards opening our 5th store in Brisbane at the end of October.
As for me I'm hoping to explore some new roles through the business and also develop my own strengths and weakness's in as many aspects of my life as possible.
