Polly Medlen is Matters Speaking’s very own Dolly Parton. She writes and sings it just like she feels it. This buxom beauty commands your attention on and off the stage. Her presence is raw, real and will leave you wanting more. She lights up any place that she is in whether it be with one or many and it doesn’t matter where she is. She has many layers just like her lyrics. The more you listen, the more she reveals herself and the more you fall in love. They say her songs and voice is a mixture of ‘country, robust with definite indie-rock sensibilities’. But we say she is just her doing her own thing in her own way in her own time. And others agree. Making a solo EP at the age of 18 with her own money she has since been nominated and won several WAM Awards. Now in the Polly Medlen Band whilst successfully juggling her busy life and other loves she and her band have recently released an EP called Hotel Loves that has featured on Triple J unearthed and is available on ITunes. As Dolly Parton says I will never stop writing and performing cause everything I am today…was based on a song. This is Polly Medlen. The more she grows so does her music and search it have it all. And she will. So get amongst it.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself and what it is you do
I am Polly. I'm a picker, I'm a grinner, I'm a lover and I'm a sinner. I play my music in the sun. I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a midnight toker. I get my lovin on the run.
Taking risks and following your dreams can create fear on the unknown. What is the most solid advise you have been given
My dad always said to me growing up 'what is meant to be for you will not go past you'. I have always loved this saying and used it as an affirmation in my life. I guess it refers to waiting, and trusting that the right things will come your way and learn to let go of the things that were obviously not meant for you - whether it is a job you are applying for, a relationship that has passed you by, or missing out on a house or an opportunity you thought was right at the time. If it is truly yours - it will stop at your feet.
Inspiration is everywhere. But what is it that you cannot live without
Music, Music, Music. I cannot drive without it, I cannot write without it, I cannot run without it, I cannot socialise without it. I cannot LIVE without it.
Your latest obsession is
Exploring small bars in gorgeous sunny Perth! There are literally hundreds of them popping up all over the place with great service, great tapas and amazing themes/decor. My friends and I are addicted - we choose one every fortnight to visit and catch up - the possibilities are endless and it is so much more fun than sitting in the same pub over and over.
Where was your last happy place
My family farm in Williams, South West WA. I absolutely love going home to the country, spending time with my Mum, Dad, brothers and niece/nephew. It's a privilege to watch everyone still enjoying the lifestyle I was lucky enough to experience as a child. I literally radiate contentment when I am there, it is overwhelming sometimes.
What do you think the best chance for change is
The best chance for change is EDUCATION. And not just the school type. I mean the type of education that can only come with your upbringing. Heart, Mind & Soul. Children learn their ignorance from their parents and whoever they spend most time with. If you are taught compassion and empathy and to listen to others regardless of race, sex and upbringing from an early age you are going to grow into the best type of human, the type with great ideas, great understanding, a great mind and a great heart - and these people will create the best chance for change.
My life in six words
Busy > Noisy > Smiles > Guitar > Cider > Friends
You will never ever
Have enough friends in life. Or forget the ones you have lost along the way.
When I was a child I wanted to be
Dolly Parton. Damn straight. Most interpret her as a gaudy, plastic bimbo but there is SO much more substance to her, and if you actually delve deeper into her history she is one of the most talented female musicians and prolific songwriters of all time. I have loved her from the moment I heard her sing.
Sometimes wrong choices bring us to the right places. What was the biggest turning point in your life when you decided to follow your dreams
When I was 23 I saved $10,000. I was faced with a choice - head overseas to meet my best friend or take the money and make my first CD. I stayed behind and compiled my songs and recorded my first CD. I started playing gigs, winning song writing awards and then I met my band and have been playing ever since. It was that moment that I chose to do something out of the ordinary, something that would define ME as a person, rather than doing everything they way my friends did. I thank god I had the courage to take that leap - because being a singer and having my band is everything in the world to me - it's how I identify myself as an individual and my life would be nowhere as nearly as rewarding without that.
